Kalevala the Musical

Book, Music and Lyrics by Johanna Telander

Kalevala the Musical is inspired by the national epic poem of Finland. The tales of Kalevala were passed down through song for generations until they were finally collected into a book of poems by Elias Lonnrot in 1835. Since then, Kalevala has been a source of inspiration to many fantasy authors, including J.R.R. Tolkien and widely cherished across the world.

Kalevala the Musical is an original story composed and written by Johanna Telander as a love letter to her Nordic roots. Two children discover an artifact in the woods and awaken the spirits of Kalevala forest. In a series of vignettes, the children come face to face with ancient legends. They follow Vainamoinen, a mage with a magical voice on his journey of self discovery, and as they get entangled in his adventures, they must learn to embrace their own creativity to not only save the realm of Kalevala from eminent darkness, but their own world as well.

The musical has been in development since 2018, and to this date it has engaged the efforts of over 200 artistic individuals in its myriad exciting concerts, readings, and other developmental phases.
